How KnowDelay Works
Airport Weather Delays
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, approximately 74% of all flight delays are due to inclement weather, impacting crews and millions of passengers every year.
For some, flight delays mean frustration, unexpected expenses, missed connections, or lost vacation time. For commuting pilots and flight attendants, delays can mean uncertainty about getting to work on time. And for pilots and flight attendants looking to pick up extra flying and earn additional pay, weather-related disruptions can also create valuable opportunities.
Whether you're looking to avoid delays or take advantage of them, KnowDelay helps you stay one step ahead.
KnowDelay predicts weather-related flight delays up to three days in advance, giving you time to make informed decisions. Protect your travel plans and find alternative flights, plan a more reliable commute, or identify potential opportunities for extra flying and premium pay.
Developed by a team of pilots, aviation experts, academics, and technologists, our proprietary prediction engine analyzes weather conditions and airport performance to assess the likelihood of flight delays. We continuously monitor airports and flights, refine our predictive algorithms, and deliver timely notifications so you can anticipate delays before they happen.
More opportunities. Smarter commutes. Fewer surprises.
No Surprise. KnowDelay.
How We Do It
KnowDelay was founded by airline pilots, technologists, and academics who recognized how complex weather and airline operations can be. As airline pilots, we incorporate the policies and practices used every day – such as closely monitoring weather and developing alternative plans – into the KnowDelay system. We developed the service specifically to help travelers avoid those frustrating weather-related delays.
We’ve created a unique weather “recipe” that uses a variety of weather models to estimate the impact and duration of a weather event and then translate that weather impact into predicted airport delays. We also look at weather across a large radius around the airport, since delays can be caused by weather that’s far from the airport. That’s all accounted for in our modeling of the hundreds of airports in North America; we especially focused on the most weather delay-prone airports in the United States.
Keeping It Simple
While the science behind KnowDelay is complex, we keep information delivery simple. We provide our predictions using an easy-to-understand three-color traffic light system: Red, Yellow, and Green, showing the likelihood of 30-minute or greater airport weather delays.
Save Time & Money With KnowDelay
Our 93% accurate model saves our customers time and money by allowing them to avoid costly airport weather delays. But we don’t always get it right; not much in life is 100% guaranteed. Just like the airline world, we don’t want to be caught flat-footed, so we over-predict bad weather. Like an airline pilot, you’ll never be surprised and you’ll have alternatives.
